EMOTAZ

February 20-22, 2004
EmoMen will be gathering near Vancouver in a lodge Feb 20-22. This will be our third year, following many principles of the Burning Man Festival including "no spectators," "gifting," "total participation" and "leave no trace." A majority of EmoMen have participated at the Burning Man Festival. The principles of the festival and of the EmoMen are related to certain writings of Hakim Bey, who coined the term TAZ, or a temporary autonomous zone. We create a TAZ in the woods to discover what it is to be men when labels are left at home.

INTENTION V

Tribal Harmonix presents the 5th annual New Year's Eve event: INTENTION V

Intention V is a five-day participatory retreat/conference that brings people together for lots of phat original electronic music, dance and movement, workshops, performances, community building, ritual, good food, and above all, learning and exploration.

It all takes place at YMCA camp Elphinstone with heated cabins and dining hall, set in the coastal rainforest on the shores of Howe Sound on the Sunshine Coast near Gibsons, BC. Intention V will run from Sunday December 28th to Friday, January 2nd. Registration is now closed. Please join us for the New Years' Eve party, tickets are available at Zion's Gate in Vancouver, or see squishelle!

The entire event is realized by volunteers. All attendees intentionally/consciously create an experience for each other. Everyone is invited to participate by hosting a workshop, performing, DJ'ing, bringing something to make the space more magical or comfortable - your imagination is the limit.

Energetically, Intention is a grounding point, a touchstone for closure at the end of the year. It is a space where we can release the dying winter season, survey the darkness in the sleeping world, and release inner shadows by sharing the rebirth of the new year with our friends and family. It is a space created to share what we have learned in the past year, set intentions for the coming year, and bond as a community.

Vancouver SANTACON 2K3 - Saturday December 20th

Vancouver - Saturday December 20th
'Tis the season for Santa to put on a cheap red suit and go out on the town.
Vancouver's fourth annual Santa Rampage, a cacophonist exercise in guerilla
street theatre and unbridled public debauchery, will paddle the ass of consumerism this yuletide season. Santarchy lives! Beware the Red Menace!

Holiday Burner Potluck & Recycled Gift Exchange

Let's get together! Everyone is welcome, of course...
Tuesday December 9th, 7pm-10pm
The ButcherShop Floor
, 195 East 26th Avenue, just off Main Street.
Suggested donation of $2 to $5 to cover rental of gallery.

If you can, bring something to share in the potluck that would feed 2-4 people max.
Bring your own plate, bowl, spoon, fork, glass. The kitchen facilities are at our disposal and include: a two burner hot plate, microwave, sandwich grill, cappuccino maker, toaster, veggie steamer, but NO OVEN!! (it's broken)

***Recycled Gift Exchange***
Participate! Bring a wrapped gift to include in the fun gift exchange game. There is a strict "don't buy anything" policy, and the idea is that you bring something from your home which you no longer desire, but that would make a really rad gift for someone else! Ideally, you do not want the packaging to give away what's inside, so be creative!

FAQ: Will there be a Chillage / BMV Camp this year?
It seems that the BMV group has reached a certain capacity where several smaller groups have started to form their own theme camps. Please join the BMV discussion list to find other like minded folks to camp with.  All West Coast camps are encouraged to camp in the same area/block, so that we can be closer to each other. Right now, the plan is to aim for the 1st or 2nd block behind the reserved theme camp areas, between 7:30 & 8:00. See you there!
FAQ: What about the Canadian Cocktail Party?
Well, as of right now, Beyond Borders will be hosting the usual Wednesday 6-9pm Canadian Cocktail Party, and it turns out that Snowflake village is also planning a big Canadian Cocktail Party for Friday nite starting at 9pm! More opportunities to drink together!

Celebrations of The Birth of The poiboy

Greetings, This is a shout out to invite you to come and celebrate poiboy's birthday, fire jam style. This b-day also marks his seventh year in Vancouver, yay!
Wednesday, April 30th 9:00ish til whenever under the Burrard Bridge on the south side (lots of parking at the Planetarium)
Bring whatever tickles your spirit. Chair(s) or blankets to sit upon, special spanking stuff, a voice bent on birthday cheer, and maybe some tiki torches perhaps. It's nice and dry under there so rain won't put any damper on the festivities.

GAMBLING, GODS & LSD

"DO NOT MISS THIS MOVIE" (squishy said so)

Ed, Carlos, Carmen, Warren, Sobey, and myself among others went to see it as part of the Vanc. Int'l Film Fest. It was amazing. 3 hours long, absolutely magical... Well worth the $10!
(no LSD required for viewing, better to watch sober, at least the 1st time!)

Some groups are forming to go on Monday and/or Wednesday.
Come early to line up together or reserve seats together.
Pacific Cinemateque - April 18th til 24th @ 7:30pm - NO SHOW ON TUESDAY

All screenings at Pacific Cinémathèque 1131 Howe Street, Vancouver (between Helmcken & Davie). Tickets go on sale at the theatre box office 30 minutes before the first show of the evening.
Advance tickets are available online - click on desired date, surcharge applies.

Adult - $7.50 or Student/Senior - $6.00
*Annual Pacific Cinémathèque membership is required: $3.

"The film addresses a part of the psyche that everyone has. It's the musical, painterly, you could even say  hallucinogenic sensibility. It relates to the realm of the unconscious and of dreams: a kind of state that involves the intellect but also bypasses the intellect. The film is a transmission of experience, at times beyond language and concepts, letting the situations speak for themselves. This has very much to do with how we use our senses, how we experience a piece of music, a situation, or an image--the combination of different sense perceptions."--Peter Mettler

Here's more info on the movie than you could ever want.

Apr 21, 2003 13:13 PDT
Where to begin
Birthdays are a celebration of life.   The joy of being. The happiness
that I felt on Saturday night was so great that only two other events in
my life over shadow it: the meeting of my wonderful wife on the playa and
the birth of my son. During the last year people have been asking what I
wanted for my 40th birthday. There was only one gift that I desired;
smiles on my friends faces. I received that gift a hundred fold. Thank
you all for sharing.
They are also marker on ones journey through time. My time on this
planet has been one of extremes. Over half of my time has been spent
removed from society. I grew up in a deserted town (we were the only
family); my trained profession of a zoologist placed my on deserted island
in the Pacific for up to six months at a time. This birthday made me feel
a part of a most wonderful community of people. It is truly a new life for
me. Thank you all for having me.
Having not been around people for such a large portion of my life has
advantages and disadvantages. I dont think I will ever remember a face -
Im so bad with names that I should just give up trying not to mention a
sometimes bizarre use of language. I have however tried never to take
anyone for granted. I love the wonderful diversity that you all are. I
wish I could personally thank everyone who helped out but I know I would
mix up a name or forget someone. Please know that I do appreciate all the
effort done in setting up that party, the music that was performed, the
special treats and the help cleaning up. Thank you all from the bottom of
my heart.
Speaking of hearts, there is one person I must thank. I thank my wife, my
lover, and my partner through this life and of many past lives. She put
up with my insane request for a birthday party. She had to deal with the
stress of having no budget, changing venues and all the other thousand
details that make a party successful not to mention a six-month-old son.
Anyone who was at the party wills knows how well she performed. The party
exceeded my wildest dreams. I cannot thank you enough. I became whole
that night on the playa when we first met. As I said that first night I
was never lonely before I met you, but having met you now I can be. When
you went home to change on Saturday night, I was surrounded but so many
wonderful friends but I was lonely. Thank you for making me feel that
way.
With deepest love,
Steven

..STRUT..

"Strut", Heaven On Earth gallery and cafe, 420 West Pender (by the surveillance shop), Thursday , April 17th, 9pm onwards, $5

The funk wafts, the winter wanes, and preparations for The Ripening have been planned. Once again Red Light Funk is offering you an opportunity to embrace an electronic experience the likes of which have not been felt since Niji was crowned and the fields were razed bare, but for the thoughts of Children... But nothing says lovin' like the red light oven, and baking up 420 West Pender is where dimention electro will be settling in next. Cozy up to the fire or tap a bended knee to the far-out sounds of tomorrow's yesteryear. Through an astonishing array of technological miracles masquerading as the 21st century, Fita_Isolante has undergone a turbonic retro-fitting to become Miss X.  Construct will be drafting records like an architect; precision angles framing the room in resonance.  Holding hands on the happy hayride of hilarity will be Rob Warren, who some of you may remember from 1840 Pandora when solastyear.com was sheltering clicks and blips there for a while. ssiess does his bitular vidular best; a sideways glance at your psyche with that 'come hither' anticipatory glint. olo plans to offer good reasons to hang on the smokin' patio out back, and puts lines elsewhere.
note: come tipsy, stay drunk (this is a regular licensed venue with regular licensed liquor prices)
And remember, Friday's the holiday! www.redlightfunk.com

Burning Man on ZeD!

ZeD will run a number of short documentary pieces, and films on Burning Man on the evenings of March 12th and March 13th. For those of you not in the know, ZeD is a late night arts n' culture on CBC, which airs at 11:25PM right after The National. One of the pieces being presented is from David Ozier, who joined some locals on the ride to BM on Zobeewa's Double Decker Bus!

Message from David:
Hi All,  Hope all is well.  CBC has confirmed a broadcast date for the Burning Man videos we did. Spread the word. Tune in. Set your VCRs. On March 12, the journey down will be broadcast. On March 13, a story on Burning Man 2002 will be broadcast.  ZeD airs nationally on CBC starting at 11:25 pm (or 11:55pm in Newfoundland).  There will also be an on-line interactive component on our site, zed.cbc.ca that will go live on March 12. Check it out and get interactive.  The videos will also be streaming on the web site as of the morning after the broadcasts. Head to ZeD and either do a search for Burning Man or do a search for dozier, both of which should link you through to the stories.  And thank you all again for sharing your journey and your passion. I really hope that you will like what I did with the material. Drop me a line and let me know what you think after you've watched it.  Sometimes I dream about big red buses full of creativity and excitement, heading toward a distant and mysterious destination...  All the best,  David Ozier

Vancouver Greeters Training!

Greeters Training/Potluck - Saturday, 15 February, 6:00pm
Tammy's house, 2111 Alberta Street (2 blocks east of Cambie between 5th and 6th)

Bring some food to share, something for yourself to drink and a pillow to sit on. Hang out with your fellow Burners and learn what it means to be Greeter at Burning Man!

A message from Sweetthang, the Greeter who is traveling up from the Bay Area to host this meeting.
"Greeter training took place in Seattle in 2002 and we walked and talked and learned the H.A.P.P.Y about greeting. Greeters ROCK and this year we are taking the training a little further north. If you have always wondered what it would be like to be a greeter than join us. For those of you who have volunteered at Greeters in the past, we feel that our focus in 2003 needs to be put on giving it back. To show our appreciation, the training meeting will be part business, part pleasure. Yes, be prepared to party it up after an hour of business. Join us in thanking each other for a volunteering well done and share your experiences with those who have not greeted before. Please join us as we prepare for "Beyond Belief" in 2003."

NEW YEARS EVE - INTENTION 2K3 @ Camp Elphinstone, Sunshine Coast

TRIBAL HARMONIX, ORGANIX / DREAMTRIBE present INTENTION 2K3

(Tribal Harmonix brought you Vancouver's EarthDance and The Reconvergence of the Tribes)

Intention is a 5 day event, and registration is now closed BUT this notice is to invite you to the New Years Eve Night-Of Party!!!! Gorgeous setting, big trees, ocean close by. Just a short ferry ride from Vancouver/Horseshoe Bay Terminal to Langdale, then a short drive.

Intention's population doubles for the Night-Of party. This year, Organix and Dreamtribe are joining forces to put on a trance room, so there will be THREE rooms of music!

Transit is the cheapest way of getting there. There will be a shuttle to the site from the Langdale end on the sailings leaving Horseshoe bay at 7:15 and 9:15 pm. Go to www.translink.bc.ca and do up a Trip Plan for transit to Horseshoe bay. It should cost you $2.00 and the ferry is $8.00 RETURN.

Tickets are $25 in advance, and $30 at the door - unlimited capacity, really!

Tickets include accommodation & breakfast the next morning, January 1st. Bring a sleeping bag & pillow, and find a spot in one of the many cabins, heated, bunk bed styles in effect, each cabin sleeps 12. Also, we have access to the lodges, a little further up the hill, which have their own bathroom, and hold 20-25 and some 30 people.

Intention--the New Years Eve party--is not a flyered event. It is spread strictly by word of mouth. We are completely unconcerned about making it "bigger". It is meant for friends and the friends of friends. It is open (new friends are made/the unity of beings beyond all else) yet intentional (trust is essential to depth). Welcome. But take responsibility.
See pics from last year's Intention.
